The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint of the human body and frequently used to perform every day tasks.
This ball and socket joint is supported by muscles, ligaments and tendons and it's easy to see why pain can occur through various plains of movement the shoulder is involved in. In addition the nerve supply to the shoulder comes from the cervical spine with nerve pathways also running down the arm to the finger tips.

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles surrounding the shoulder joint. As well as performing various actions to move the arm and shoulder, their job also is to fully support the shoulder joint itself keeping the ball in the socket. Through significant trauma, incorrect loading or sporting injury, anyone of these muscles can tear.
Performing repeat movements everyday can cause pain soreness to occur.
Osteoarthritis can occur in the shoulder joint leading to bony spurs forming through lack of mobility and lower production of synovial fluid.
An impact injury, fall or strain through sporting pursuits can all lead to pain either in the the joint it self or impingements of the various muscles ligaments and tendons that surround it.
Nerves can get trapped within the tissues or within the cervical spine itself . Most common of which is nerve compression that also causes altered nerve sensation/numbness.
