Does it Hurt?
A common question I get asked about Sports Massage is, does it hurt? The short answer is, probably.
The long answer explains things better.
For a start, everyone is different. Everyone has a different pain threshold. Some people even have medical conditions whereby pain is heightened.
But Sports Massage, at its heart, is typically going to be a bit uncomfortable & the mantra of ‘no pain no gain’ will have to be applied. My job is to apply enough pressure to tight/stiff muscles and to find pain trigger points.
I’ll talk to you throughout your appointment and give prior warning to anything about to happen. If the pain is too much, I can ease off, go slower. Whatever helps you get through it. I’ve found that the majority of my patients find their own unique way off getting through it. Deep breathing, talking (even using the most colourful language) and listening to music are all tried and trusted ways that have seen my patients finish their treatment!
One thing is for certain. All of my patients stand up at the end of their massage and can attest to feeling incredible. “I feel like I can float” is a phrase I’ve heard all too often. It really is a no pain no gain situation. The results of Sports Massage are worth the short-term feeling of being uncomfortable. Keep in communication with your massage therapist and trust that you’re in the safest pair of hands!
